THE WORKSHOP
HOW TO BECOME AN OCTOPUS
(and sometimes squid)
We are evolving the human species based on the cephalopod, the class of animals including octopus, squid and cuttlefish. Through psycho-physical exercises we train cephalopod sensitivities and capacities that help us to enact new ways of being with ourselves, each other, and the world. Open to anyone curious about cephalopods, new ways of sensing, and expanding the definition of self.

WHAT PARTICIPANTS SAY
“I’ve studied animal behavior for 20 years, and our 90-minute workshop was the first to provide the experience of being another animal, as well as identifying the biases I bring with my human-centered viewpoint. It was truly transformative.”

DOUGLAS B.
Scientist, Harvard University
“It was very powerful to feel myself as part of a group. In my everyday life, I will remember that - not to think only about myself, but how to think about myself as part of the group - because we are the same body at the end.”

THE INSTITUTE FOR TRANSHUMANIST CEPHALOPOD EVOLUTION was established in 2017 at the MIT Media Lab by interdisciplinary artist and researcher Miriam Simun. A pioneering organization dedicated to exploring the future of the human amidst rising seas and accelerating technological change, the research resides at intersection of human evolution, cephalopod biology, neuroscience, group dynamics, deep sea diving and somatic practices. Through research, education, and experiential programs, ITCE seeks to expand the boundaries of human perception and intelligence by drawing inspiration from one the oldest and most adaptable species on planet earth: cephalopods. Committed to developing biotechnologies of practice within existing human bioavailabilities, the Institute fosters radical new perspectives on adaptation and self and group transformation.
